Family Dog & Puppy Training in Newbury & West Berkshire
At The Family Dog Academy we help busy families turn excitable puppies and unruly dogs into a calm, confident family dog — with private, one-to-one training in the comfort of your own home.
How We Work
Every session is private and one-to-one. This is a deliberate choice, not a smaller version of a class. Dogs learn in context, and the context that matters is your actual home, garden, and street.
Our free first session is a diagnostic in-home visit that includes an assessment in your dog's real environment. If lead-pulling is the main issue, we will go on an actual walk on your normal route. We actively encourage children and partners to be part of every session, not just the dog. Consistency across the household is part of the method, not an afterthought.
Any behaviour that gets rewarded will only get stronger — good and bad. If your dog jumps up and you fuss him, he'll keep jumping up. That is why we work with the whole family to ensure everyone is on the same page. Value is demonstrated before a price is discussed.
Where We Work
Because training happens in your own home, our service area is important. We come directly to you, whether you are based in Newbury itself or out towards Thatcham, Tadley, and Didcot. Our private training covers families across West Berkshire and North Hampshire, including Hungerford, Lambourn, and Kingsclere. You should know before enquiring whether your town is covered, so if you live in or around these areas, we are ready to help you build a calmer, more confident dog in the environment that matters most.
What Families Say
Inviting a trainer into your home is a big step. Most families are a little unsure before our first visit, but feel completely reassured and relieved by the end of it. Here is what some of our local families have to say about their experience.
"[TESTIMONIAL 1 — replace with a real quote about the in-home visit or the whole-family involvement]"
"[TESTIMONIAL 2 — replace with a real quote about a specific behaviour change, e.g. lead-pulling or jumping]"
"[TESTIMONIAL 3 — replace with a real quote from a Newbury-area family, ideally naming the town if the customer is comfortable with that]"

Our Training Methodology
We don't believe in quick fixes or harsh corrections. Our approach is designed to build a strong, trusting relationship between you and your dog, leading to long-lasting behavioral changes.
Positive Reinforcement
We focus on rewarding the behaviors we want to see, rather than punishing the ones we don't. This creates a dog that is eager to learn and happy to cooperate, rather than one acting out of fear.
Evidence-Based
Our techniques are grounded in the latest canine behavioral science. We continuously update our knowledge to ensure we're providing you with the most effective and humane training strategies available.
Real-World Results
We train in your home and local environment where the behaviors actually happen. This ensures that what your dog learns translates directly to your everyday life together, not just in a classroom.
Our Training Services
We focus on helping you feel confident training your dog yourself — not just during our sessions, but long after they end.
Puppy Training
Bringing a new puppy home is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming! Our puppy training gives your new companion the best possible start. We'll cover all the essentials — from toilet training and recall to chewing, biting, and good manners. We'll help you navigate those crucial early weeks with confidence.
Explore Puppy TrainingDog Training
As puppies grow into adolescence and adulthood, new challenges often appear. Our dog training supports adolescent dogs up to around three years old. We'll help guide them using kind, positively reinforced methods that build trust and focus, tackling issues like pulling on the lead, poor recall, and jumping up.
